About Project Independence

Project Independence is a social housing development for people with an intellectual disability.

It represents a new model of home ownership. The project provides people with an intellectual disability the opportunity to acquire equity in a property, as well as the ability to live as independently as possible. The new social housing model is based on up to ten residents living in three separate homes, with accommodation for a live in Resident Coordinator to support residents.

Social Impact Report

Home ownership rates for young people with an intellectual disability (ID) are among the lowest in Australia. Created as a social business, Project Independence (PI) aims to provide people with an ID with a pathway to achieving ownership of a property, through ownership of a company share.

Through our unique financial model that utilises a component of their disability pension, residents have access to suitable, safe and affordable housing that promotes a sense of commitment and community. The PI person-centred approach is designed to support residents to grow their independence while improving their position in the housing market.
